January 1st, 2012 To date, the foundation has connected 14,250+ children to nature through the Mobile Classrooms, camp and scholarships. We look forward to connecting many more. October 1st, 2011 Foundation board members agree to expand Spirit of Alexandria Nature Camp to two camps, each sponsoring 30 campers. August 13th, 2011 EAGLE Scout Joel Simpson, with the aid of 20 friends and family broke ground on the Butterfly Garden (used as his scout project) at Howell Conference & Nature Center. The garden is a joint project between the foundation and HNC with Alexandria as the inspiration. The garden is in the shape of a butterfly hosting plants that attract butterflies and are native to Michigan. July 25-29th, 2011 The first Spirit of Alexandria Nature Camp was held at The Howell Conference & Nature Center. The camp had 26 students, in grades 2nd-6th, who spent 5 days and 4 nights experiencing nature and learning about how they can be stewards of the earth. July 19th, 2011 The 5th Annual Spirit of Alexandria Golf Outing set record number of 4-somes since the first year. 24 4-somes participated with 140 guests at dinner. This years outing raised $52,000. Thank you to all who participated and especially those who were sponsors. Two companies have sponsored the outing all five years, G/S Leasing and VIA. May - July 2011 Alexandria's Nature Bus, located in Jackson, Wyoming has kept busy. 4 1-week programs in conjunction with Wyoming Land Trust took place in 4 different Wyoming cities. Teton Science Schools also held programs for families in the Armed Services that had family who just recently returned from active duty; helping families to reconnect in a natural environment. June 2011 With this year's two students who attended the Middle Scholl Field Ecology Program at Teton Science Schools, the foundation has now sent 19 students on full-scholarship on the amazing 10-day ecology experience.. December 1st, 2010 Six foundation Grants have been given to local schools for an Alexandria's Nature Bus visit. July 14th, 2010 The Howell Nature Center started using the 2nd Alexandria's Nature Bus for transportation. Their first jaunt was to take students canoing. Dick Grant, Howell Nature Center Director, estimates that more than 10,000 people have walked through the 1st Nature bus, with this second bus, we can't imagine the number of children and adults that will be connected to nature. July 13th, 2010 The 4th Annual Golf Outing was extremely successful, far exceeding anyone's expectations. The foundation raised $52,000. If it weren't for the generous donors and sponsors this couldn't have happened. July 8th, 2010 The 3rd Alexandria's Nature Bus is donated to foundation by ARBOC Technologies. It was painted to match the other two buses and will have decals applied to it that represent the Wyoming ecosystem. Due to the lengthy winter and narrow roads throughout the national parks, this bus will be used by the Teton Science Schools. June 2010 The Nature Bus #2 (or Red Bus) returns from being painted. April 14th, 2010 Alexandria's Nature Bus visits its first school. October 16th, 2009 Larry and Colin Smith traveled to Jackson, Wyoming to pick up the Nature bus, for its return to Michigan. Once the bus is home, it will be painted and decaled to match Alexandria's Nature Bus #1. July 14th, 2009 At the 3rd Annual Golf Outing, Alexandria's Nature Bus debuted. Brandon Dean and Dick Grant (both from The Howell Nature Center) shared animals and birds of prey from the center as well as spoke about how they will use the bus in their programming. The outing raised $40,000 - Thank you to all who participated. April 17th, 2009
The 3rd Annual Golf Outing date was changed to Tuesday, July 14th. The fundraiser will be at the Wyndgate once again. April 9th, 2009 Starting in the 2009 summer the Yellow Bus will start be used locally in Michigan. The first step in preparing the mobile classroom for connecting children to nature was to have the roof repaired. Arboc Mobility generously took care of this. July 2008 Benj Sinclair, a naturalist at the Teton Science Schools, accompanied tribal members from the Shoshone-Bannock tribe. Benj and the Red Bus traveled throughout the Yellowstone Eco system learning and sharing. July 9th, 2008 The foundation had a very successful fundraiser at the Wyndgate. The 2nd outing raised $35,000. June 2008 Leah Bennett and Danielle Nolan painted 16 river rocks with various deisgns. The rocks were then added to the garden at CSA. May 2008 16 Mum and 8 decorative cabbage plants were planted in the garden at CSA. May 2008 3 Charyl Stockwell Academy students were awarded scholarships to the Middle School Field Ecology Program at TSS. Jessica, Claire and Katie will be attending the June program where they will be meeting a student also sponsored by the foundation. Kyle is a student who lives in Wyoming. January 24th, 2008 Craig and Leah Bennett will be leaving for Jackson, Wyoming so that they can have meetings regarding the current and future use of the Mobile Classroom. More details will follow. November 27th, 2007 Two beautiful butterfly chairs were delivered to the Charyl Stockwell Academy. They were each uniquely painted; one as a Monarch for Alexandria and the other to represent a butterfly Charyl Stockwell had drawn. In spring Alexandria's chair will be placed in the area with the Butterfly Bushes. October 18th, 2007 The first phase of the garden at Charyl Stockwell Academy was created and planted with 3 different Butterfly Bushes, purchased with money donated by Bordines Nursery in Brighton, Michigan. The areas that were planted with bulbs in October of 2006 will be worked on in the spring of 2008 so that they are consistent with the newly planted area, October 5th, 2007 The 3rd issue of The Amazing Newspaper was mailed to all on the foundation's mailing list. This issue was eight pages due to the wonderful articles and creative art submitted by people of various ages. The most recent issue can be downloaded through the Amazing Newspaper page. September 15th-October 18th, 2007 The Mobile Classroom was used by the Center of Wonder in Jackson, Wyoming, providing free programs to children. Each program is geared around a different area of ecology. An example of one program was studying fall colors and then taking what they learned and creating something artistically to show what they learned. August 15th, 2007 2nd Annual Spirit of Alexandria Open scheduled for July 7th, 2008, held again at the Wyndgate in Rochester Hills, Michigan. July 27th-August 6th, 2007 The first Mobile Classroom left on its journey to Jackson, Wyoming, with Bud Bennett, Steve Locke and Keith Adams at the wheel. The bus was to transport Crow Indians and Park Rangers into Yellowstone National Park, however the bus had some mechanical difficulties. The foundation hired Stagecoach to provide a driver and bus. Leah Bennett, Corrine Bartel and Danielle Nolan flew out on July 29th so that they could meet with the leaders of the program. Throughout the 5 day program everyone had a chance to spend time with the Tribe members and Park Rangers. The overall experience was quite memorable. July 16th, 2007 All of the students that went on scholarships to the Middle School Field Ecology Program at the Teton Science Schools have returned to Michigan. Each of the students that were chosen expressed enthusiasm and thanks for the opportunity. July 8th, 2007 The First Annual Spirit of Alexandria Open was held with great success. Our initial goal for funds raised was $18,000. We are proud to say that we reached $27,000. We thank everyone that participated. June 1st, 2007 Students at Charyl Stockwell Academy donated $2,000 to the foundation. The money raised was through their annual Penny Drive. Each year the student counsel chooses a local charity to help. The foundation is very grateful. May 4th , 2007 Al Foris from TMC handed over the keys to Leah and Craig for the Red Bus; this will become the first Mobile Classroom being delivered this summer. TMC graciously their donated time and material to install a new roof and windows, along with new seat covers and fresh exterior paint. Wayne Turner, a representative from the Teton Science School will be driving the Classroom to Jackson Hole, Wyoming after the Golf Outing on July 9th. April 30th , 2007 Applications for the scholarships to attend the Middle School Field Ecology Program at the Teton Science School for turned in on the 20th of April, at Charyl Stockwell Academy. We received 13 applications. On the 30th of April, the 4 students were chosen; June will have a boy and a girl, July will have two girls attending. We look forward to the entertaining stories and the adventures once they return. April 24th , 2007 The flowers planted at the Charyl Stockwell Academy last fall, are in full bloom. The students, teachers and visitors to the school are enjoying the blooming rainbow. While the flowers were pushing through the ground this spring, Mrs. Hovenstot is teaching a class on naturalizing the retention pond area. The foundation is helping to provide Native Michigan plants for the students to plant. March 14th , 2007 Issue 2 of the Amazing Newspaper was printed and mailed to all on the mailing list. We received some wonderful artwork from the Bear Exploration Center in Montgomery, Alabama. The theme for the next issue will be "Signs of Spring". November 23rd , 2006 Alexandria's Yellow Bus has come home. The bus pictured on the "Mobile Classroom" page is now owned by the Foundation. Simply visit http://www.goodsearch.com/ , type The Spirit of Alexandria Foundation into the Charity field. Once you do this, every time you search using GoodSearch a penny will be donated to us. Pass it along, every penny counts. October 20th , 2006 Nine volunteers helped to plant 750+ daffodil and tulip bulbs at The Charyl Stockwell Academy. The flowers will bloom in the spring adding joy to the retention pond area. This is the first step in the naturalization of the pond and surrounding area. September 25th , 2006 In two weeks the foundation's tri-fold brochure will come off the presses. If you are interested in obtaining a hard copy send us a request. We will also post a PDF file so that anyone can print out a copy to share with others uninformed of our mission. September 10th , 2006 The foundation is currently working on plans for the first mobile Classroom. The hope is to have delivered to the Teton Science School for use in mid 2007. As specifics are decided on, we will post them on our site for all to see. September 5th , 2006 The first issue of the Amazing Newspaper was printed and mailed to all on the foundations mailing list. Our next issue will have the theme of: "If you were a Monarch, where would you migrate to in order to hibernate over the winter?" August 26th , 2006 Leah and Craig attended a golf outing in Traverse City, Michigan, supporting the St. John Foundation. This foundation provides aid and support to families in time of grief. St. John's was very supportive to Craig and Leah this past December. The Spirit of Alexandria is currently planning a similar fundraiser for 2007. August 20th , 2006 The Spirit of Alexandria Foundation held a small party to celebrate the success of our first scholarship program to the Teton Science School Field Ecology Program. In attendance were foundation board members, scholarship winners and their families, CSA science teacher and the Directors of the Charyl Stockwell Academy. It was some how healing to hear the 4 students exchanging their personal experiences and how this chance was important to them. Leah and Craig announced that the application process for the 2007 scholarships will begin in January of 2007. July 15th , 2006 At the Annual race held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI (July 14th - July 16th), Spirit of Alexandria sold shirts celebrating the 40th Anniversary of CAN-AM racing, on the sleeve is the Foundation logo. The shirts and screening costs were entirely donated, allowing all monies raised to go entirely to the foundation. We still have several shirts if anyone is interested in purchasing a shirt (M, L, XL, XXL, and XXXL). Please email us if you are interested in purchasing a shirt at $25 per shirt. July 26th , 2006 Heather Taylor and Brian Bigelow, the second of the scholarship winners, returned from Jackson, Wyoming. The main difference from the June to the July program seemed to be the amount of animal sightings. Again, Leah and Craig received thanks from the well deserving students. June 29th , 2006 Heather Bourns and Lauren DeTombe returned from their trip to the Tetons. Leah spoke with each girl after their return and received unending thanks for their opportunity. June 22nd, 2006 Our Foundation received it's letter from the IRS, stating we have our 501c3 status. A link will be added to the Donation page for interested parties to download. June 18th , 2006 The first two students from Charyl Stockwell Academy left for their 10 day Ecology program at Teton Science School. June 13th, 2006 Craig and Leah and several staff at Charyl Stockwell Academy, chose 4 students to be awarded with the Teton Science School scholarships. The process with which the students were chosen was in very depth. The four students were very deserving and will represent CSA and the Spirit of Alexandria Foundation wonderfully. May 29th, 2006 Craig and Leah, Jim and Corrine and Biz had an extremely successful meeting with key people at the Teton Science School in Jackson, Wyoming. TSS donated 4 student scholarships to their Middle School Ecology Program in June and July. They also generously provided us with a Teacher Retreat for one teacher from Charyl Stockwell Academy. May 24th, 2006 Leah and Corrine purchased 45 Gerber Daisy plants and delivered them to CSA for the students in Alexandria's class to plant in 6 large pots. 2 pots were placed outside the Orca class window and 4 pots were placed along the sidewalk for all to enjoy. May 13th, 2006 Leah and Craig had a preliminary meeting with Chuck and Shelley Stockwell at Charyl Stockwell Academy. Plans for the Memorial Garden were started, as well as a potential relationship with Teton Science School and CSA. Another meeting will be scheduled before the end of the current school year. April 1, 2006 A new Board of Trustees was elected to diversify our board.
